Johnston Projected and Actual Release Dates
NC Department of Adult Correction uses the exact label Projected Release Date. It is a calculation based on the sentence information and credits recorded at that point. A released person’s sentence history can instead show Actual Release Date. That second field documents a completed movement from the stated correctional episode. Neither field should be read alone when there are several sentence components, consecutive terms, or later supervision.
A pretrial detainee at Johnston County Detention Center is different. No court-imposed confinement term has yet produced a sentence-release calculation. Bond, a dismissal, a plea, a judgment, time-served credit, or another legal event may change custody. Another authority’s hold can prevent community release even when the local case would otherwise permit departure.
Removal from Johnston’s live “currently housed” list is not an actual release date. The person may have gone home, entered NC DAC custody, moved to another county, or been picked up by another authority. Confirm the destination and the recorded release or transfer event.
Find a Johnston Projected Release Date
First identify the custodian. State prisoners and people under state supervision belong in NC DAC Offender Public Information. A local jail sentence must be checked through JCSO and the Johnston court judgment. Current county detainees do not gain a state projected date merely because Johnston Correctional Institution is located in the same county.
- Classify the custody. Decide whether the person is in the Johnston jail, an NC DAC prison, federal custody, immigration custody, or another county.
- Match the person. In DAC, search by offender ID when available. Otherwise compare name with birth or age information and open the full record.
- Read all sentence components. Check Sentence Begin Date, Minimum Term, Maximum Term, service status, county of conviction, and current location.
- Find the exact field. Record Projected Release Date and current incarceration status. Do not substitute Next Custody Review, Last Movement Date, or a parole review entry.
- Check what follows. Read Probation/Parole/Post Release Status and any parole begin or end dates to see whether community supervision is expected.
- Verify near the event. Recheck DAC, register for NC SAVAN, and after movement look for Actual Release Date and updated status.

The search screen is only the entry point. An Inactive result can reflect a completed state correctional episode, but the detail must establish what ended. An Active Probationer/Parolee result can mean the person is outside prison while still under correctional control.
North Carolina Release Date Structure
North Carolina should not be reduced to a blanket “serve 85 percent” formula. Structured Sentencing governs most offenses committed on or after October 1, 1994. For an active felony, G.S. 15A-1340.13(d) generally requires service of the court-imposed minimum, subject to specific statutory mechanisms. Earned time may reduce the maximum, but not below that minimum. DAC’s victim-support explanation describes this as service of 100 percent of the minimum.
The judgment states a minimum and maximum. Jail credit can count toward the term. Qualifying work or program earned time can bring the maximum toward the minimum, while discipline can affect credits. G.S. 148-13 authorizes DAC rules for earned time and related allowances. Those rules operate with the judgment and sentence type, not as a free-standing percentage calculator.
The maximum also accounts for post-release supervision in covered felony structures. Under G.S. 15A-1368.2, covered Class B1 through E terms generally move to post-release supervision when 12 months remain, and Class F through I terms when nine months remain, with statutory adjustments. Registry offenses use a longer supervision structure. Leaving prison before the numerical maximum can therefore be lawful while the person remains supervised.
Note: Sentence grids, offense classes, old-law parole cases, impaired-driving terms, and special sentences prevent one percentage from fitting every Johnston County case.
Johnston County Jail Release Computation
Johnston County Detention Center does not publish an online release-date calculator. For an activated misdemeanor, G.S. 15A-1340.20(c) and (d) generally call for day-for-day service subject to authorized earned and work credits. The combined local credits described by those provisions generally may not exceed four days per month. The actual calculation still depends on the judgment, credited confinement, the custodian’s credit records, and any holds.
Start with the Johnston court judgment. It can show the sentence, whether it is active or suspended, and credit for time already served. Then call JCSO jail information at 919-989-5040 for current custody and release-processing questions. If a documented local sentence date is needed, request the admission and release entry plus any public computation information tied to that booking.

A person sentenced to NC DAC may remain briefly in the county jail while awaiting transport. That stay does not turn the county roster into the source of the state sentence projection. Once the person enters state custody, use the DAC offender ID and state record.
Why Johnston Release Dates Change
A release projection changes when the information used in the calculation changes. Some adjustments shorten the remaining custody period, while others extend it or change the custodian. The cause must be confirmed in the sentence, credit, movement, or hold record. A changed date does not by itself show misconduct or agency error.

DAC also warns that work-assignment or program changes and discipline can alter a projection. “Next Custody Review” is a classification review. It is not a release date, parole date, or promise that custody level will change.
Federal and Johnston Release Dates
A person held for federal authorities needs a federal check. The BOP Inmate Locator shows a Release Date and Location for people in BOP records, mainly from 1982 forward. A future date is projected. “UNKNOWN” means the term is not determined, and “IN TRANSIT” does not mean release. A past date with no facility location generally indicates departure from BOP custody, but another system or supervised release may still control the person.
USMS can manage federal pretrial detention and transport without a complete public historical roster. If a federally held person disappears from Johnston’s jail list, federal pickup is possible and community release should not be assumed. Use the federal court case and later BOP record where appropriate.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator checks immigration custody when an ICE transfer or detainer is documented. It does not provide a general criminal sentence-release projection. No dedicated ICE facility was confirmed in Johnston County. A missing locator result cannot establish release, and ordinary county departures should not be labeled immigration transfers without a source.
Confirm Johnston Projected Release Alerts
North Carolina SAVAN, delivered through VINELink, can send state notices for projected release after admission audit, release with supervision, release without supervision, and other custody events. County event options may differ. Registration is a useful second channel because the projected date shown in DAC can change between checks.
Open the correct record, choose an available notification event, select phone, email, text, or TTY, and complete the confirmation shown. Telephone registration uses a four-digit PIN. Treat each alert as a prompt to verify with the reporting custodian. A transfer alert means the person left that facility, not necessarily that the person entered the community. Near the expected date, compare the latest DAC Projected Release Date with incarceration status and current location. After movement, look for Actual Release Date and the Probation/Parole/Post Release Status. For a county term, call JCSO and inspect the court judgment because NC SAVAN is not a sentence calculator.
Document Johnston Actual Release
A completed release should be documented through the record created by the custodian. For NC DAC, use the person detail, incarceration history, and release status. The separate DAC Inmate Releases search can locate state releases in the current year and two prior years. Its release county filter does not mean the person left the Johnston County jail or was convicted in Johnston. Open the offender record and compare county of conviction, incarceration history, and release type.
For the county jail, request the booking and release entry from JCSO with the person’s name and approximate booking date. Ask for the admission date and time, release date and time, release type or authority, and receiving agency if a transfer occurred and that field is public. The agency may redact protected information and need not create a record it does not maintain.
North Carolina public-records law supports access to public portions at reasonable times. G.S. 132-6 also calls for copies as promptly as possible and separation of public material from protected content when they are mixed. Ask for electronic production and a legal basis for any denial.
